WEEKLY UPDATE - MAY 27
Welcome back to the Weekly Wrap Up! Last week was committee meetings with several important items.
It was a heavy day at Community and Public Services. We received a report on Edmonton’s response to homelessness, including mortality rates. Over 300 unhoused Edmontonians died last year. These are stark numbers, and a tragic reminder about the work we need to do.
The annual Edmonton Coalition on Housing & Homelessness Memorial service will be held at the statue just north of City Hall next week on Thursday at 1PM to remember, grieve, and honour those lost this year. I encourage everyone to attend.
A strong ray of hope amidst these numbers was our discussion on the Community Plan to End Homeless. This plan is coming together in an impressive, integrated approach with clear lines of accountability. I'm looking forward to ongoing work to reflect user experience in the process.
The other big item was at Executive Committee, where we discussed the future of Hangar 14, the home of the Alberta Aviation Museum. The museum is a unique asset and highlights the key role aviation has played in Edmonton’s growth as a community. The City will be negotiating the transfer of the Hangar to the museum. This will allow the museum to stay in its current home and maintain the historic hangar for future generations to enjoy. I'm looking forward to the final deal, and continuing to visit the museum in O-day'min!
That’s all for this week, looking forward to a robust conversation about District Planning in the coming days!
