WEEKLY UPDATE - JUNE 28
Welcome to a belated weekly wrapup! Last week was a big one at #yegcc
Community and Public Services heard the 2023/2023 Snow and Ice Control report. Great work was done by the crews but we saw how carefully we need to consider new development based on our ability to pay for operations - more roads mean more pressure on our budgets.
We also heard we need to ensure that winter isn't a barrier for those living with mobility challenges. Committee passed a motion for more work to be done with the Accessibility Advisory Committee.
There was also a report on drug checking services being provided by the City. This would likely fall outside of our jurisdiction and ability to support, but the report highlighted the importance of the City's Municipal Drug Poisoning Response to help make Edmonton safer for all
Urban Planning Committee saw a great turnout for Zoning Bylaw Renewal. We had close to 75 speakers who shared a diversity of perspectives - I was very impressed by the level of engagement and thoughtful conversation.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak. What no one disagrees with is how important our neighbourhoods are to all of us, both now and in the future of our city. Be sure to provide your feedback on Zoning Bylaw Renewal by July 30 at https://engaged.edmonton.ca/zoningbylawrenewal
At Police Commission, we heard presentations from experts working on the collection of race based data. After hearing from these speakers, the Commission passed a motion to amend their previous request for race to be included on Provincial ID.
The new motion asks for a consistent Province-wide system to collect this important information. This data will help ensure our systems and processes are supporting all Edmontonians equally, and I appreciate the Commission's ongoing advocacy on this topic
Executive Committee received the annual reports from the Business Improvement Areas. O-day'min is lucky to have 5 ½ amazing BIAs within our borders and I'm so grateful to all the BIA staff, boards and businesses that help make our community a vibrant and exciting place
We also heard an update on the incorporation of Indigenous partners in the River Crossing Business Plan. I'm excited by the proposed approach of ongoing, intentional dialogue with rights holders and feel this will be an important part of our continued work towards reconciliation
There was an update on the Downtown District Energy as well. I'm looking forward to the next stages of planning that will allow us to start expanding district energy and low carbon energy generation throughout the core and Edmonton as a whole!
That’s all for last week, and hope you have a wonderful Canada Day long weekend and catch you next Tuesday!
