WEEKLY UPDATE - JULY 8

Welcome back to the weekly wrap up! Our last Council week before the summer recess was a big one!

We welcomed zoning for new multi-unit housing in Central MacDougall, commercial uses in an existing building in Wîhkwêntôwin, naturalized areas along the 121 Street linear park, and simplified regulations in the Quarters. It goes to show what a dynamic ward we live in!

At Council, we made an important decision about how we manage new suburban growth. We asked City staff to do more work to figure out how we can pay for the new roads, parks, libraries, and fire halls needed in new neighbourhoods, and the cost of cutting grass and ploughing snow. We've also asked for a plan to make sure we have enough industrial and commercial land to support our city finances. It's important that we have a healthy mix of both residential and non-residential land to pay for the essential services that Edmontonians depend on.

I was also pleased to support a motion upholding our policy of paying the living wage to contractors working for the City. This is a critical way that we can build a more inclusive economy and ensure this is an Edmonton for everyone.

Council is now on summer recess so this will be the last weekly update until August. I'm looking forward to time to celebrate in community, meet with stakeholders, catch up on email, and rest and recharge with friends and family. Enjoy the season and catch you later this summer!
