WEEKLY UPDATE - SEP 11

Utility Committee met last week to review EPCOR’s annual report. There was lots of positive news and it gave me lots of ideas about what to look for in the 2025-2027 Performance Based Regulation rate filing process that we'll be delving into in coming months. We heard how Edmontonians can engage in the Performance Based Regulation Rate (PBR) filing too. It may sound dull but the PBR has a big impact on both the utility bills you pay and the way we plan for the future. I encourage you to get involved as opportunities come up!

We also discussed critical upgrades to Edmonton’s water treatment plants to prepare for floods. I strongly support this project but wanted more details on ecological impacts. We passed a motion to have a report back on the vegetation management and landscape plans moving forward.

The Single Use Items Bylaw also received its first update. The results of the early period are encouraging, with businesses generally feeling well prepared for the change and the vast majority of businesses complying or on their way to compliance.

At our non-regular Council meeting, we discussed updates on our partnerships with the Alberta Government on shared priorities like public safety, affordability, and economic diversification. It was a good reminder of how much common ground we share.

Last week also included a meeting of the Special City Auditor Recruitment Committee. The Auditor is one of only two employees hired directly by City Council and they serve a critical role in mitigating risks for the City. I'm excited to be part of the recruitment team!
