WEEKLY UPDATE - MAY 15

Welcome back to the weekly wrap up! I hope you all had a lovely Mother’s Day weekend.

We had some great news at Utility Committee - Natural Resources Canada has provided a $23.7m grant for Blatchford Renewable Energy! This is a fantastic investment that supports decarbonizing the neighbourhood's heating and cooling system.

We also heard from EPCOR who are starting work on their rate filings for 2025. This is a major piece of work that will impact your water and drainage rates in the years ahead and there are a lot of different considerations that go into this process. To ensure that we cover all the important topics in depth, EPCOR presented the key discussion papers they'll be bringing forward over the next year, including equity, climate change, and how public engagement will be conducted. It sounds very dry, but is a great opportunity to see what goes into our utility rates and how we as regulators navigate providing affordable, effective services to Edmontonians.

At Council, we approved three resolutions that we will be advancing at the Alberta Municipalities Annual Convention, including climate change, housing, and downtown and main street economic recovery. This will support advocacy across Alberta on these important issues.

That’s all for this week, see you again soon!
