Weekly Update - May 20th, 2022

This week was a heavy one. Much of our discussion at Council focused on safety and wellbeing, and how we use our community resources to support it.

The urgency of these conversations was demonstrated in the tragic events in Chinatown on Wednesday. My heart goes out to those directly affected and to all those businesses and residents who have been calling for change for too long. This type of violence has no place in our community.

As committed in our meeting with Chinatown representatives last night, Mayor Sohi and I will be connecting with the community again next week to outline the immediate actions we can take to improve safety, drawing on the $5m allocated earlier this week for safety initiatives in the downtown.

I encourage anyone affected by these events to reach out to your support system, the Canadian Mental Health Association, or other resources, and to support one another during these difficult times.
