WEEKLY UPDATE - MAR 17

Welcome back to the Weekly Wrap Up! It was a relative quiet week at Committees last week, with a few key highlights.

Our special Council meeting and committees were focused on the City’s Civic Boards and Agencies. Our 17 ABCs are a huge part of keeping the City operating, with everything from naming public places, reviewing designs, to business license appeals. Last week we reviewed their annual work plans and recruitment for new members. I’m always impressed by the great work being done and the dedication and care brought to our agency, boards, and commissions by Edmontonians from all walks of life. Thanks to everyone who has stepped up to serve our city!

At Utility Committee, we made a decision to end curbside Christmas tree pick-ups. This program started in 1990 and has had a steady decline in use for several years, with just 6,408 pickups in 2025. Ending the program will save about $120k in overtime and fuel costs for the additional pickups. Your Christmas trees can still be dropped off at Eco Stations, or you can cut them up into small pieces and add them to your green bin. More information will be posted to WasteWise in advance of next Christmas for tips on how best to dispose of your Christmas tree.

Speaking of Eco Stations, we also approved the expansion and improvement of the Coronation Eco Station. This station hasn’t received any capital investment for 25 years. The upcoming changes will include improved car queuing and more bins to support faster services. These improvements will mean closing the existing Eco Station down for about 18 months. The team has looked to minimize peak season disruption and the Strathcona and Kennedale Eco Stations will remain available throughout the construction period. I look forward to the renewed station to come!

That’s all for last week. Hope you had a great weekend!
