Weekly Update - Aug 29, 2022
We had a big week with some important wins and hard choices on Edmonton City Council.
I collaborated with Councillor Michael Janz on a motion to add additional enforcement and fines for excessive vehicle noise, with a plan to have this rolled out by spring 2023. I’m hoping for a much more peaceful summer next year!
I was pleased to see the curbside parking strategy moving forward through Urban Planning Committee. Parking is a big question in O-day’min and I am excited to see how we can better manage public parking assets and make the most of these shared spaces.
Not everything is good news unfortunately. On Wednesday at Executive Committee we made the difficult decision to close Scona Pool. I was deeply moved by the incredible display of community and deep love for the space that all the speakers brought to the Committee. It was with a heavy heart that I voted for closure, with the safety risks and substantial costs to extend the lifespan of the facility simply being too great at this time. I’m glad we were able to pass a follow-up motion to ensure all the groups using Scona Pool are accommodated at other facilities and with the transportation connections they need to travel there smoothly and safely.
To round off the week, we heard about EPCOR’s progress with PBR. It’s definitely drier than what we usually think of when we see PBR, but Performance Based Reporting is a great way to measure how we’re achieving outcomes that are important for our community. I’m deeply impressed by the holistic approach EPCOR is taking on initiatives like the Stormwater Integrated Resource Plan. There’s also some very exciting progress on smelly sewers through their Corrosion and Odour Reduction program.
Thanks for reading my weekly recap, smell you later!
